-THEM-
Character name: Kaname Madoka
Series: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Character history: http://wiki.puella-magi.net/Madoka_Magica
I will be taking Madoka from episode 11, when she is in the shelter deciding what to do about Walpurugisnacht.

Character personality: Madoka is a kind, personable girl -- almost to a fault. While she doesn't go out of her way to overtly help strangers (she chooses to believe Mami instead of Homura at the beginning of the series because Mami is more familiar and comforting), she is polite to everyone and attempts to be a good friend for people who need her. As the nurse's aide, she is responsible for assisting people who are sick -- a job that requires a lot of compassion and caring on her part. This sort of thing really defines Madoka throughout the series: her compassion and dedication to her friends keeps her coming back to the world of magical girls, even when it seems too dangerous for her. She can't leave them alone to face their terrible fates; she wants to bear some of their burden for them in whatever way she can, even if it's just being there to hug and support them through their losses.

But something that Madoka suffers from as a result of her desire to help people and her gentle personality is the fact that she continually feels useless. As the only girl unable to think of a suitable wish in her motley group of friends, Madoka places herself (mentally) as the weakest link: she is unable to come to a clear conclusion which, in her mind, makes her a liability. As a result, she can be indecisive and faltering, wanting desperately to help but not wanting to take wishing so lightly as to give her soul away for nothing. However, this does not make her weak -- as her friends note throughout the series, Madoka is perhaps the most loved of them all. The entire series turns around her selflessness -- it is in fact this trait that makes the series possible. Her ability to jump in and save others is clear even when she's hesitating; it's not the fact that she's scared that holds her back, but rather the belief that she has no valuable means with which to help everyone. If she could, Madoka would gladly save everyone from their terrible fates…and she does, ultimately, achieve that goal.

What makes Madoka a sympathetic character in that regard is how much love and care she has. At home, she loves her parents and her brother dearly -- giving them up is the hardest thing for her, though she does it because she loves them, and not because she wants to leave them. It is exactly this reason, that she loves her friends, and their happiness, and every magical girl's precious wish that means so much to them, that she decides to become a magical girl herself at the end of the series. Madoka cannot bear to see anyone suffer: this, combined with her deep desire to be of use to everyone, especially her friends, helps her make that ultimate decision. The caring, kind girl who helps her friends and gently encourages them becomes a girl for whom the hope of the world is held in highest regard.

Journal entry sample:
Ah...

[ The video turns on to a shy smile and a small nod. ] I'm Kanama Madoka. I don't know very many of you, but I hope that we get along well.

I've never been away from home for this long before. I don't…think that I can accept that my home is fictional. But I want to help everyone here as much as I can, even if I don't have many useful skills.

Also…if anyone has seen a girl named Akemi Homura, I'm looking for her. It's very important. So please, if you see her, will you let her know?

Thank you very much.

Log/prose based sample:
She wasn't exactly intending to pick up a new pet on the way home. Really, she was only walking back from school, enjoying the new scenery with a slight bit of trepidation (being told she was fictional, still, was troubling). It was only when she passed an alley on the way back to the apartment complex and heard a small mew that fate was sealed. Peering into the darker corridor, she spied an orange, wiggling creature rolling around in an overturned trashcan.

"Oh…" She wasn't sure if the cat had an owner, but she couldn't just let it live in the alley. It already looked too thin, its sad meows echoing in the trashcan's interior. Maybe….she could take it home? Perhaps her roommate wouldn't mind too much: after all, the kitten was very cute, and needed a good home. At least until she could find someone else to take it, another loving person who might be a better owner.

Slipping into the alley, Madoka kneeled down, cautiously extending her hands for the cat. The kitten hesitated when it noticed her and she withdrew a little; what if it didn't want to come? She surely shouldn't force it. That would be dangerous for both her and the cat in question. Still, after a few minutes, it warily wandered over to her….backpack. She had sat it down to get at the cat, but it seemed more interested in whatever was inside than her bare hands. With a start, she realized that she still had half of a tuna sandwich in the outside pocket. "You can have it." She smiled, pulling out the sandwich and opening it so that the cat could get to the meat inside.
